If you or your kids are learning Mandarin, or you just like going on a fun ride, I recommend checking out The Forbidden Kingdom. I just saw it last night, and I really liked the movie.

It’s kind of like The Never Ending Story meets Once upon a time in China. It’s not cerebral or super preachy, but the “go on a journey of growth and everyone learns a lesson in the end” kind of movie. It’s geared towards kids, but the fight scene between Jet Li and Jacky Chan is just epic – amazing.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of Mandarin spoken in the movie too. If you are learning Mandarin, it is quite a treat. I look forward to more English / Mandarin films like this.

One of the characters in the film is the Monkey King, and if you’ve been studying Chinese for a while you’ve probably heard of the Monkey King as I have. Unfortunately, I don’t know the story, so I can’t say if this is some tweaked adaptation of the Monkey King story or if he’s just a character.

Anyway, as you can tell I am not a movie reviewer, but if you’re on the hunt for Mandarin material, or you dig 功夫 (Kung fu (or really 武术)), checkout the Forbidden Kingdom.

(Now if we can just get Peter Jackson to do a version of the Three Kingdoms…)
