George, you are both right and wrong.

You are right in that you are not the target demographic, most people aren't. And if you aren't then you don't bitch about it, you just buy the model that does suit your needs.

There are many different types of people out there with many different sets of needs. Companies like to cater for all of them, not just you and your specific set of needs.

Anywho, I've recently purchased an Air and this is part of why it suits my needs.

I work a lot in collaborative environments, mostly educational. Having a laptop that I can easily carry around the class is great. Yes I could carry around a normal MacBook too but why should I put up with the extra weight when I don't have to. And after a full day of doing so you do appreciate the lightness.

I love simplicity and believe it's a big part of the quality of my work. I surround myself with simplicity wherever I can.

I don't need all that other stuff (I know most people will but i don't). My old laptop had 2 usb ports, no optical drive, a Centrino chip (clocked down to 600mhz), 256mb ram and a 30gb hard disk. I can't remember the last time I used either of the usb ports, I've only used an external optical drive once or twice in the 5 years I've had the laptop, the hard drive is not even 1/2 full and overall performance was more than adequate.

Most people prefer to pay more for more features. I'm a person who likes to pay more to have features and complexity removed and my life streamlined and simplified. The Air does exactly that for me.

Not a bad idea at all :)

I'm probably going to be completely ignorant and rude here, but I really can't see the point of the Macbook Air. It should be called the 'Macbook HotAir'.

It's just a thinner MacBook with functionality cut out. Why not just spend £100 more and get the base MacBook Pro (or £500 less for the Macbook)? Is the fact that it's a bit lighter and thinner than an already light and thin laptop really worth giving up an optical drive, bigger HDD, faster CPU, better graphics, (user)swappable battery, more USB ports and firewire?

Doubtless, I'm not their target demographic, but they only people I can see buying them are people with plenty of disposable income who just have to have the latest Mac hardware.

Jeez... I really am getting old and cynical!
