So far I like all the new UI changes in Leopard – accept the Dock. It kind of reminds me of that 3D OS Sun was going to put out (I forget what it was called – spyglass or something), but the dock just hits me wrong for some reason. I do, however, like the way the dock looks when it’s on the side.

I stumbled across Aral Balkan’s blog where he talks about a hint he found on macosxhints. The hint is how to set the dock’s look on the bottom to be the same as it is on the sides:

Finderscreensnapz002

Just pop open a terminal and type:

$ defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES
$ killall Dock

The other stuff he mentions doesn’t bother me. I think the Tiger menu bar was blindingly white – I think the new bar is subtle. I can see where he is coming from with some of his gripes though, I do kind of miss the rounded top bar, but with the menus now rounded, it might look a little funky.

Anyway, my one UI complaint was the dock – it was just too fancy for me. This was a great find, thanks Aral.

P.S. It’s great when the worst thing you can find about your OS is “the corners aren’t rounded”.

P.P.S My Powerbook G4, PowerMac G4, and my wife’s Intel Macbook all upgraded with out a hitch. The 2 G4s where fresh installs, and the Intel used the upgrade feature.
