I have some mixed feelings about this, but all in all I think it’s a
good thing - actually it’s a great thing. I am hanging up my web
application development hat for good and going to work on a commercial
desktop application. Which one? Shockingly - Microsoft Excel.
I know I have been brutally honest (sometimes a bit mean) towards
Microsoft in the past, but it seems that Steve Sinofsky (the VP of MS
Office) saw my application
Nystrom and I guess he was impressed (while it’s still raw it works pretty
well) because he emailed me about it, and we got to talking.
He told me about how Microsoft is the second largest employer of OS X
developers (behind Apple of course), and how the cost of living in
Redmond was far better than here in the Bay Area (plus MS has a great
benefits package), and I’d get to use a Mac at work(!) which is a dream
of mine :)
Anyway, most of my friends know I’ve been trying to get on with a large
company. I’ve tried Apple, Google, and Macromedia with no answer from
any of them (not even a no thanks) so when Steve had me chat with John
Durant (the Manager of the Office Team) I was pretty stoked. When the
offered me a position I was a bit stunned seeing all the bad mouthing I
had done, but they were really cool about it.
Everyone in the CF community has been very nice to me over the years,
and I’d like to think that I’ve given people helpful tid bits about web
development, and CFEclipse will still be around thanks to Spike and the
rest of the crew. I’ll still be bloging (after I’ve finished moving up
to the Seattle area), but my focus will be more on Microsoft and desktop
applications.
I wish you all the best of luck
Cheers,
Rob Rohan
