Hi, I am Leon from Malaysia. It is nice to know that you have interest learning Chinese, I happened to know that from once of the you-tube video. “Chinese on Ubuntu”. A great video on Ubuntu guide. Well about the sentence above it will be better replace言into说, as the word言 is more on ancient chinese. And about the video , which I mention about, you showed one sentence一个肥美国人, well… the character肥is better replace with胖. although the meaning is same is a adjective to describe fat, however the character肥mainly describe on animal, no offense. Hope it help on learning mandarin.

@Bill - the only way I can learn is by getting corrected ^_^ I see why that is better I was getting confused on which verb to put the bù on. Also, I often use google translate to "check my work", and I think I need to stop that because I think it makes me worse. I had 说 there in the first place, but using 说 the google translation was odd. I need to just assume I am doing it right. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to show the right way.

@John ... are you serious? You are two different people? I had no idea :-/

I haven't gotten to travel much at all yet. It would be interesting to visit (or work) in Taiwan for a while for sure. I don't know many traditional characters, but if it's mostly spoken Mandarin that would be fun. I am told that if I can somehow get immersed - even for a month or two - learning goes a bit faster.

Good to hear you're still getting regular exposure... it can be hard to measure progress in that vast area of knowing-a-little-but-not-knowing-it-all. We learn in peaks and troughs, but adding some regular exposure helps a lot.

Have you been able to visit Taiwan? The visa requirements are less than the PRC, and there's still more Mandarin spoken than in Hong Kong.

(btw, I got disoriented from seeing the Twitter comments with Sydney's John Dowdell, took me a moment to figure things out.... ;-)

Admire your determination to study Chinese. Hate but have to correct you, as you may find the truth of grammatical difference between English and Chinese from my correction.

The following are more understandable Chinese:

我能写好字。我不能听和言不好。因为我不能听，我就喜欢我的新CR2电台。每天我听“澳洲早安！“。我常常知道一两个字。

言 is more classic Chinese. people usually use 说 or 讲 instead. Hope it won't take you long understand and speak. 500 words usually can get you pretty far.
