&lt;p&gt;There&#039;s an Apple Store opening in Qianmen too, which used to be the old redlight zone for the Forbidden City. (Sanlitun is a big area for foreigners, but Qianmen is becoming very showcase-touristy... interesting blend.)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Brands are very important. There&#039;s extra cachet in an authentic high-end brand, but even a faulty Rolex knockoff conveys status. Buying a real Apple iPhone would mean more than using an unlocked iPhone.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Comparative pricing for the Sanlitun store seems to be about 30% higher than US, and considering that food and housing are so much more economical in Beijing, that&#039;s a big difference:
