Microsoft is upset over Google buying Double-click. So much so they are urging antitrust officials to do something about it.
Now, I am not saying they are wrong, but isn’t this a bit… I don’t know… hypocritical coming from a company that has a monopoly on the desktop market (like 90% or something)? I mean really. How can MS happily play up and defend it’s “right” to a monopoly on one hand, and call for others not to be able to have one with the other?
I guess that’s just business – that was my daily chuckle.
However, despite the messenger, I’d actually agree with Microsoft on this. A lot of sites depend on ad revenue to survive. If the ad revenue comes only from one company odds are that company will control what people say. This is really no different than print media.
I think a lot of sites are already afraid to upset Google for fear of having their ad revenue taken away. Google doesn’t seem like the most open minded company if you disagree with them or go against what they say. Remember cnet getting banned from interviews when they used Google to research the CEO? Look around on the net for people who’ve gotten banned from Google and how hard of a time they’ve had getting “re-listed”.
To me, they seem to be trying to control web sites and content rather than indexing them – which is a bit frightening to me.
Anyway, I bet they’ll get their ad monopoly, and I think Microsoft is upset because it’s getting beat at it’s own game.
What do you think?
(hopefully Yahoo! can get theirs in working order soon and provide some competition)
