harlo, i hope its not too late. I suggest you go buy a keyboard shield and do the markings manually yourself. Its much easier and cheaper!

For what it's worth, the current Taiwan keyboard part number is MB110TA/A (for the aluminum USB version)

You might be able to get a US Apple store to special order it. I would go in, stand around and be friendly but persistent until they have no choice but to either order for you or call Cupertino to find somebody in Apple who can.

Good luck! It's really useful to have the localized keyboard. I can't believe that university language departments aren't beating on Apple to get these for various languages.

I found this link:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304933

Also, wikipedia contains a lot of info on Mandarin input methods, search for pinyin, zhuyin, cangjie, input methods, etc.

I'm typing this from a keyboard I just purchased in Taiwan.
Like you I started to learn Mandarin and bought it as an accesory to my hobby.

My keyboard is qwerty and also has Zhuyin characters (Pinyin in a Mandarin notation, also known as BoPoMo or BoPoMoFo) and Cangjie.

I'm not sure this is a "universal" Mandarin keyboard, or a localized Taiwanese version, since there are differences in the use of the language.
The taiwanese use traditional (unsimplified) characters, and the Mandarin notation for BoPoMoFo is also not widely used anymore outside of Taiwan, or so I've read.
I read that most of China uses the romanized pinyin, just like we do.
Kind of hard to find accurate info on all the subtle variations of this language.

If you want to see the keyboard layout for different input methods on a Mac, you can select the input method you want to check, and show the Keyboard Viewer, to see which key does which character.

Hi Ootie,

Re: #1 http://robrohan.com/2007/06/09/create-chinese-keyboard/

About the others, I wanted a proper Mac keyboard not a pseudo one, but I've given up now as I am not sure there is a keyboard / style that is designed for simplified (the stickers, and the layouts they go with - as far as I can tell - are all for traditional style).

I think I am just sticking with the pīnyīn for now.

Thanks ^_^

1) have you tried those stickers? for example search on ebay for chinese + keyboard
2) have you thought about the chinese keyboard cover? they only make them for the laptops but them make them in black, white and all the sizes. again try ebay and chinese + keyboard
3) i saw the keyboards at the mac store in taibei last spring. i wanted to get one but my luggage was already a stressy mess.
4) it is true, you don't need the keyboard if you've got pinyin. also they have tablet input (but you might find your handwriting sloppying-up since they recognize characters written using incorrect stroke order)

good luck

Hello again. I downloaded OpenVanilla and my girlfriend has found it very useful, although it's a bit clunky, as some words in pinyin may actually represented by several characters according to the tone and context, etc. But it gets faster with practice (like anything...). Seems like a good substitute for a keyboard, at least for occasional use.

Thanks, Michelle, your info about the method of using a chinese keyboard was interesting.

hello there, i have only seen your message (posted in Jan) now. Any luck finding a chinese keyboard ? fyi, it does exist. It is something like any other international keyboard with additional signs printing on each letters, which only 'help' to find the keys...

Otherwise you may actually type chinese without any chinese keyboard, it is run by softwares as you have mentioned. Yes, after adding chinese in your preference, you may choose in your bar among mostly used Cangjie, Jianyi, or Pinyin... Yes, with Pinyin you may type chinese by pronouncation of Mandarin (chinese)... If you are interested, i have just posted an article regarding chinese keyboard in my little blog (sorry mostly in french) where you would find a table helping you to find those keys. Hope it helps.

best regards,
